Optical turbulence modeling in the boundary layer and free atmosphere using instrumented meteorological balloons

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper, we study the behavior of atmospheric turbulence in the boundary layer and free atmosphere using balloon-born radiosondes. The data measurements were carried out with 168 balloons launched from 9 sites. Profiles of various parameters (C 2 N , M 2 and L o ) characterizing atmospheric turbulence are established. We work out statistical models of atmospheric turbulence in the boundary layer, and we checked their coherence by comparing them with other models. In the free atmosphere, the C 2 … Show more

“…Instead, a model OTP is required that would summarize the main characteristics of turbulence at a given site in a form suitable for predictions of instrument performance. Such models have been developed in the past (Hufnagel 1974; Abahamid et al 2004a). The OTP at CP has been characterized for the first time during the 1998 Gemini site campaign (Vernin et al 1998) and a model OTP consisting of seven discrete layers has been derived from this study by Ellerbroek & Rigaut (2000)– hereafter ER2000.…”

“…The balloons used are described by Abahamid et al 2003. 20 We agreed to use only few voles to carry out at Paranal site. The aim of this section is to carry out a detailed daily comparison between the data set measured simultaneously from instrumented balloons and data obtained from the NCEP/NCAR global circulation model for the same night.…”
