Optical Spectroscopy for Noninvasive Monitoring of Stem Cell Differentiation

Abstract: There is a requirement for a noninvasive technique to monitor stem cell differentiation. Several candidates based on optical spectroscopy are discussed in this review: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. These techniques are briefly described, and the ability of each to distinguish undifferentiated from differentiated cells is discussed. FTIR spectroscopy has demonstrated its ability to distinguish between stem cells a… Show more

“…Madre (CM) y la medicina regenerativa, son el control en la diferenciación de CM y asegurar la pureza de las células diferenciadas [1] . Una CM, se define como aquella célula que tiene capacidad de autorenovación y potencialidad de diferenciación, y puede mantenerse en estado indiferenciado por tiempo prolongado.…”

“…The automation of standard planar culture methods has shown promise, and improved control, but is afflicted by high entry costs and limited scalability. These planar culture system developments have necessitated parallel development of new non-invasive analysis methods, such as image analysis or spectroscopy [32,33]. Finally, systems have been designed for high-density support of adherent cells, often by virtue of diffuse mass exchange via perfused fibres or suspended particles.…”

“…It has already been used successfully to discriminate, classify and diagnose malignancies and various tumors [166][167][168] without having adverse effect on the cells analyzed. 169 Huser and co-workers 170 have suggested Raman microspectrometry to be a valuable tool in assessing sperm quality for assisted reproduction.…”
