Abstract:As airborne sound is density variation, it can be measured optically by detecting the refractive index of air, enabling us to observe a sound field not tractable by a microphone. In this paper, the history and principle of the optical measurement of audible sound are presented together with the methodologies (laser Doppler vibrometry and high-speed polarized interferometry). Some examples of optically measured sound fields are also shown.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
