Optical Seti Observations of the Anomalous Star Kic 8462852

Abstract: To explore the hypothesis that KIC 8462852's aperiodic dimming is caused by artificial megastructures in orbit (Wright et al. 2015), rather than a natural cause such as cometary fragments in a highly elliptical orbit (Marengo et al. 2015), we searched for electromagnetic signals from KIC 8462852 indicative of extraterrestrial intelligence. The primary observations were in the visible optical regime using the Boquete Optical SETI Observatory in Panama. In addition, as a preparatory exercise for the possible fut… Show more

“…KIC 8462852 is a peculiar and intriguing source that caught a lot of attention from the astronomic community in the recent years (Boyajian et al 2016;Montet & Simon 2016;Lisse et al 2015;Wright & Sigurdsson 2016;Bodman & Quillen 2016;Harp et al 2016;Schaefer 2016;Makarov & Goldin 2016;Schuetz et al 2016;Thompson et al 2016;Abeysekara et al 2016;Marengo, et al 2015;Hippke et al 2016;Neslušan & Budaj 2017). KIC 8462852 is an F3V star located at about 454±35 pc away from us (Hippke et al 2016).…”

“…Therefore, the Harp et al (2016) and Schuetz et al (2016) limited observation times and wavelength coverage are not sufficient to produce firm conclusions on power beaming from KIC 8462852. Most applications would be seen in the radio-if transmissions were oriented in our direction at the proper time and at the frequencies observed-but are not.…”

“…In addition to radio measurements, an optical SETI measurement has been conducted toward KIC 8462852 using the Boquete observatory (Schuetz et al 2016). Its photomultiplier detector has a detection threshold of 67 photons m −2 using a 25 ns gate time.…”

“…Observations have mostly focused on FGK stars and individual objects, such as the anomalous star KIC 8462852 (Schuetz et al 2016;Abeysekara et al 2016), and exoplanet host stars Trappist-1, GJ 422 and Wolf 1061 (Welsh et al 2018).…”
