Noble metal nanoparticles support localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) that are extremely sensitive to the local dielectric properties of the environment within distances up to 10-100 nm from the metal surface. The significant overlap between the sensing volume of the nanoparticles and the size of biological macromolecules has made LSPR biosensing a key field for the application of plasmonics. Recent advancements in evaluating plasmonic refractometric sensors have suggested that the phase detection of light can surpass the sensitivity of standard intensity-based detection techniques. Here, we experimentally confirm that the phase of light can be used to precisely track local refractive index changes induced by biomolecular reactions, even for dilute and layers of short-range-ordered plasmonic nanoparticles. In particular, we demonstrate that the sensitivity can be enhanced by tuning in to a zero reflection condition, in which an abrupt phase flip of the reflected light is achieved. Using a cost-effective interference fringe tracking technique, we demonstrate that phase measurements yield an approximately one order of magnitude larger relative shift compared with traditional LSPR measurements for the model system of NeutrAvidin binding to biotinylated nanodisks.

Abstract:We studied the far-field optical response of supported goldsilica-gold nanosandwiches using spectroscopic ellipsometry, reflectance and transmittance measurements. Although transmittance data clearly shows that the gold nanodisks in the sandwich structure interact very weakly, oblique reflectance spectra of s-and p-polarized light show clearly asymmetric line-shapes of the Fano type. However, all experimental results are very well described by modeling the gold nanodisks as oblate spheroids and by employing a 2 × 2 scattering matrix formulation of the Fresnel coefficients provided by an island film theory. In particular, the Fano asymmetry can be explained in terms of interference between the scattered waves from the decoupled nanodisks in the spectral range limited by their respective plasmon resonances. We also show that the reflectance and ellipsometry spectra can be described by a three-layer system with uniaxial effective dielectric functions.

Plasmonic color generation from metal nanostructures has attracted intensive attention because of their excellence in achieving high spatial resolution, strong color contrast, and long‐term durability. The limited area of plasmonic patterns anchored on substrates and produced by current top‐down methods, however, severely restricts the advanced developments and potential applications in structural color display. Herein a robust method for realizing the laser printing of plasmonic colors inside transparent gold nanodisk‐embedded poly(dimethylsiloxane) matrices is presented. It is found that various colors can not only be easily generated by embedding gold nanodisks of different sizes, but also finely varied by adjusting the laser pulse intensity during printing. It is further demonstrated that multiple color layers can be laser‐printed at different depths. Stereoscopic images in the 3D matrices are laser‐printed with sizes as large as 12 × 15 mm2 and a resolution of 4600 dots per inch.
