The solubility and uniform distribution of lanthanide complexes in sol-gel glasses can be improved by covalently linking the complexes to the sol-gel matrix. In this study, several lanthanide b-diketonate complexes (Ln ¼ Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Er, Yb) were immobilized on a 1,10-phenanthroline functionalized sol-gel glass. For the europium(III) complex, a sol-gel material of diethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS) with polymer-like properties was derived. For the other lanthanide complexes, the sol-gel glass was prepared by using a matrix of tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) and DEDMS. Both systems were prepared under neutral reaction conditions. High-resolution emission and excitation spectra were recorded. The luminescence lifetimes were measured. r

A homogeneous distribution of luminescent lanthanide(III) 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate complexes (Ln ) Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) in an organic-inorganic hybrid material was obtained by grafting the complexes to the solid matrix via 2-substituted imidazo[4,5-f]-1,10-phenanthroline moieties. Thin films of the silica hybrid material were prepared by the sol-gel method and by spin-coating of the gelating solution on glass slides or on oxidized silicon wafers. The thickness of the thin films was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). High-resolution luminescence spectra of the lanthanide complexes were recorded, and the luminescence decay times were measured. The luminescence quantum yields of europium(III)-doped thin films exposed to different drying conditions were determined by using an integrating sphere.

Optical absorption spectra of monolithic silica sol-gel glasses incorporating the lanthanide complexes [Ln(bpy) 2 ]Cl 3 , [Ln(phen) 2 ]Cl 3 and Ln(NO 3 ) 3 (bpy ¼ bipyridyl, 2,2'-bipyridine, phen ¼ 1,10-phenanthroline, Ln ¼ Nd, Sm, Dy, Ho, Er) were recorded. The Judd-Ofelt theory was used to study changes in the coordination sphere before and after water was expelled from the glass matrix by heat treatment. The intensity of the hypersensitive transitions was found to increase significantly, which is reflected by an increase in the O 2 intensity parameter. The non-hypersensitive transitions are influenced by the native sol-gel matrix rather then by the type of ligands. The O 4 and O 6 parameters remain more or less constant upon heat treatment. In accordance with theoretical predictions the values of both O 4 and O 6 of the lighter lanthanides are larger than those of the heavy lanthanides.
