Optical imaging spectrometers

Abstract: Two optical systems for acquisition of two-dimensional Images are described. The systems, respectively, an electronic slitless spectrograph and a monochromatic Imaging spectrometer, both usé a Czerny-Turner monochromator for spectral discrimination. A silicon Intensified target vidicon detector provides quantitative Images In time-integrated or timé-resolved modes. By use of simple single-lens Imagetransfer optics with a monochromator, spatial resolution on the order Of 0.3 mm Is attainable. Applications of th… Show more

“…27,28 In essence, the optical system is akin to that in a conventional photographic camera, although here a monochromator stands in place of the aperture in the conventional photographic system. By placing the monochromator entrance slit at the aperture plane of the optical system, and by unscrambling the image of the entrance slit that appears at the exit slit, we are able to collect a full twodimensional image of the discharge at any desired wavelength.…”

“…Monning et al [25,26] reported the use of a CCD device to produce a three-dimensional structure of the Ar ICP. Hieftje and associates [19,27,28] used a monochromatic imaging spectrometer to investigate the effects of easily ionizable elements on calcium emission in an Ar ICP. Denton and coworkers [29] and Scheeline et al [30][31][32][33] used CID-and CCD-based spectrometers for diagnostic studies of high-voltage spark, Theta-pinch discharges, and direct-current plasmas .…”

For analytical applications, ICP-based spectrometers using CID and CCD devices have been introduced recently into the marketplace [34-36], but these systems are not designed for monochromatic imaging. As stated earlier, imaging studies of Ar ICP discharges have been detailed elsewhere [19,27]. Our objective in this work was to acquire monochromatic images of atmospheric-pressure He ICP discharges to speed up investigation and development of a viable helium plasma for analytical spectrometry.…”
