Optical ferris wheel for ultracold atoms

Abstract: Abstract:We propose a versatile optical ring lattice suitable for trapping cold and quantum degenerate atomic samples. We demonstrate the realisation of intensity patterns from pairs of Laguerre-Gauss (exp(iℓθ )) modes with different ℓ indices. These patterns can be rotated by introducing a frequency shift between the modes. We can generate bright ring lattices for trapping atoms in red-detuned light, and dark ring lattices suitable for trapping atoms with minimal heating in the optical vortices of blue-detune… Show more

“…On the one hand, bright ORPs have been proposed and demonstrated with high-azimuthal-order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams [199] and also with annular microlenses [200,201]. Azimuthal lattices within ORPs have been demonstrated with time orbiting of light beams [202,203] and by interference of LG beams of different azimuthal orders [204]. A one-dimensional stack of ORPs in a line has been proposed in an optical cavity [205] and demonstrated with axicon beams [206].…”

“…Among the DOEs that generate optical vortices are phase spiral plates [2,3], helical axicons [4,5,6] and spiral zone plates [7]. The ability of the fork-shaped holograms and diffraction gratings to produce vortex beams from an incident Gaussian laser beam was experimentally verified [8,9] and after, widely used for guiding cold atoms [10,11], optical manipulation of micron-sized objects [12,13], and in quantum information applications [14,15], since these vortex beams carry definite photon orbital angular momentum [16].…”

“…To overcome this limitation, we could utilize a versatile optical ring lattice and rotate the lattice smoothly and continuously in much faster speed [18]. However, for adiabatically transporting single atom in the trap, the acceleration a of the rotating trap must fulfill ma…”
