Optical emission from a kilonova following a gravitational-wave-detected neutron-star merger

Abstract: The merger of two neutron stars has been predicted to produce an opticalinfrared transient (lasting a few days) known as a 'kilonova', powered by the radioactive decay of neutron-rich species synthesized in the merger 1-5 .Evidence that short γ-ray bursts also arise from neutron star mergers has been accumulating 6-8 . In models 2,9 of such mergers a small amount of mass (10 − 4 -10 − 2 solar masses) with a low electron fraction is ejected at high velocities (0.1-0.3 times light speed) and/or carried out by wi… Show more

“…This multimessenger data provided convincing answers to many outstanding questions. For instance, the detection of a short gamma ray burst (GRB) 1.7 seconds after GW170817 [24][25][26], and subsequent kilonova [27][28][29][30][31][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44], confirmed that BNS mergers are a progenitor of these events. Lanthanide signatures in the kilonova light curves also showed BNS mergers to be a major site for nucleosynthesis of elements heavier than iron [40,44,47,48].…”

“…For the second trigger, our algorithm selected the correct host galaxy as fifth in priority from the list of 182 galaxies identified in the LIGO/Virgo localization region. This allowed us to obtain early data of the counterpart (Arcavi et al 2017a). …”
