Optical Diagnostics of the Maxillary Sinuses by Digital Diaphanoscopy Technology

Abstract: The work is devoted to the development of a scientific and technical basis for instrument implementation of a digital diaphanoscopy technology for the diagnosis of maxillary sinus inflammatory diseases taking into account the anatomical features of patients (differences in skin structure, skull bone thickness, and sinus size), the optical properties of exercised tissues, and the age and gender characteristics of patients. The technology is based on visualization and analysis of scattering patterns of low-inten… Show more

“…Bryanskaya and colleagues developed a basis for instrument implementation of digital diaphanoscopy technology for the diagnosis of maxillary sinus inflammatory diseases, taking into account the anatomical, age, and gender features of patients. Their approach may be promising as a screening method for assessing the condition of maxillary sinuses both in hospitals and medical institutions, as well as remotely in the absence of otolaryngologists and diagnosticians [ 6 ].…”

“…The presence of absorption is associated with high values of the absorption coefficient of pathological areas at the probing wavelengths originated from high blood content or presence of absorbing exudates [19][20][21]. Subsequent registration of diaphanograms allows one to visualize the presence or absence of a pathological change [15].…”

“…The experimental arrangement developed in this work includes an applicator probe with LEDs at wavelengths of 650 and 850 nm, a CMOS camera for recording diaphanograms, and a unit for adjusting the brightness of the LED applicator. Power levels are set for each of the wavelengths for diagnostics in patients of diff erent sexes [7].…”
