Optical Diagnostic Based on Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract: Au nanoparticles (NPs) possess unique physicochemical and optical properties, showing great potential in biomedical applications. Diagnostic spectroscopy utilizing varied Au NPs has become a precision tool of in vitro and in vivo diagnostic for cancer and other specific diseases. In this review, we tried to comprehensively introduce the remarkable optical properties of Au NPs, including localized surfaces plasmon resonance (LSPR), surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF).… Show more

“…Diagnostics are very essential to medical science and clinical practice. Some diagnostic methods (such as immunoassay diagnosis) have been applied to clinical diagnosis but have limitations in precision molecular diagnostics because of their inaccuracy and low sensitivity ( Ou et al, 2019 ). With the development of nanotechnology, the sensitivity, specificity, and multiplexing of diagnostic tests have been improved.…”

“…With the development of nanotechnology, the sensitivity, specificity, and multiplexing of diagnostic tests have been improved. AuNPs exhibit substantial and excellent optical properties, mainly including localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which play an important role in their application to diagnostics ( Ou et al, 2019 ; Venditti, 2019 ). LSPR-based application of AuNPs is due to spectral modulation ( Figure 11 ) ( Ou et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Spherical nucleic acid Au NPs conjugates consisting of densely packed recognition oligonucleotides with complementary sequences to the target mRNA was studied. It was able to detect intracellular mRNA level [ 89 ]. Ultrasmall polyaminocarboxylate-coated Au NPs, a dithiolated derivative of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid, and 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecan-1-glutaric acid-4,7,10-triacetic acid functionalized by thioctic acid show potential for image-guided radiotherapy.…”

“…The aggregation of AuNPs results in a pronounced color change from red to blue (shift to longer wavelengths) dependent on inter-particle distances ( Figure 6 ) [ 63 ]. Color changes of NPs are closely correlated with the resonance between an oscillation of electrons and the incident electromagnetic radiation [ 74 ]. It is worth mentioning that optical properties are changed with size for other types of NPs such as quantum dots [ 75 ], as well.…”
