Optical devices for the detection of cyanide in water based on ethyl(hydroxyethyl)cellulose functionalized with perichromic dyes

Abstract: Films of three polymers, based on ethyl(hydroxyethyl)cellulose functionalized with protonated perichromic dyes, were used for anion sensing. The polymer functionalized with protonated Brooker's merocyanine acts as a chromogenic/fluorogenic system for the selective detection of cyanide in water. An increase of >28 times was verified for the fluorescence lifetime of the sensing units in the polymer in comparison with protonated Brooker's merocyanine in water. Moreover, an increase in the pK values was verified f… Show more

“…Several fluorescent dyes have been used in combination with polymer systems for the design of optical detection devices. ,, However, no reports on the use of 4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide [DSMI] for the functionalization of polymers could be found in the literature. This fluorescent dye has been used in many applications, for instance, in the analysis of protein aggregation and in the identification of the cell nucleus through interaction with DNA .…”

“…The use of fluorescent dyes associated with polymer systems for the design of optical devices has been reported in the literature. More recently, 4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide (DSMI, Figure ) was utilized in the design of materials based on functionalized polymeric systems. This compound is a perichromic probe, which has been utilized in the investigation of pure solvents, , solvent mixtures, and β-cyclodextrin in aqueous medium. , DSMI has also been applied in the analysis of protein aggregation, in the identification of the cell nucleus through interaction with DNA, in the analysis of glioma, and in the bactericidal treatment against Helicobacter pylori…”
