Optical Coherence Tomography Identifies Lower Labial Salivary Gland Surface Density in Cystic Fibrosis

Abstract: The labial minor salivary glands (LSGs) are easily accessible mucus-secreting structures of the alimentary tract that may provide new information on the basis of gastrointestinal complications of cystic fibrosis (CF). It was shown that they are destructed in the course of cystic fibrosis. We employed wide-field, micrometer resolution in vivo optical coherence tomography to assess the surface density of LSGs in 18 patients with CF and 18 healthy subjects. The median LSGs’ surface densities in CF patients, and i… Show more

“…Also, when the biopsy is processed for fixation, the epithelium of the mucous membrane separates from the glandular tissue; in normal biopsies the connective tissue layers remain intact (39). Most recently, using the non-invasive technique of optical coherence tomography, a lower density of labial salivary glands has been demonstrated in CF patients than in a group without the disease (41).…”

“…Its participants were age‐matched to a group of middle‐aged patients with Sjögren's syndrome . The other concerned the diagnostic potential of LSGs’ OCT in cystic fibrosis and explored its mucosal pathology . The control group for the CF study was age‐matched to the patient population, which was young.…”

This research concerns the two groups of healthy subjects, which differed both in age and in body mass index (BMI).…”
