Optical coherence tomography evaluation of posterior capsule opacification related to intraocular lens design

Abstract: The PCT was most affected by IOL characteristics. Poly(methyl methacrylate) IOLs and IOLs with rounded edges were associated with higher PCT. Hydrophilic acrylic IOLs were associated with greater PCT than hydrophobic IOLs. Posterior capsule thickness was a factor in decreased BCVA.

“…The differences in wavefront response after capsulotomy between the 2 IOLs could be explained by differences in the adhesiveness of the IOL material to the capsular bag, 20,21 and in PCO type. 22,23 Another factor that could play a role in the wavefront difference is the difference in flexibility between the IOL biomaterials. The material of the hydrophilic IOL we used in our study is more flexible than that of the hydrophobic IOL we used.…”

“…These values were averaged to yield a global average RNFL thickness measurement (360 degree measure). All images were acquired by 3 experienced operators, 2 of whom were coinvestigators of previous OCT studies, [10][11][12] on the same day as the visual field and the HRT-III data were acquired. The OCT operators differed from the visual field or HRT-III examiners and were masked to the other findings.…”

“…15 Outside the retina, it has also been investigated in filtering blebs 16 and posterior capsule. 17 However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has been devoted to optical intensities of retinal layers in normal subjects. Our work is an attempt to overcome the lack of such information about the normal ranges and physiological variations of optical intensities in individual retinal layers.…”
