Optical coherence tomography angiography in pseudophakic cystoid macular oedema compared to diabetic macular oedema: qualitative and quantitative evaluation of retinal vasculature

Abstract: Patients with PCMO have an impairment of mainly DCP, partially reversible after treatment. Furthermore, we disclosed that different alterations of the retinal vasculature characterise CMO derived from two different diseases, namely PCMO and DMO, and this could be due to their distinct pathophysiology.

“…OCT angiography is an emerging noninvasive diagnostic technique that is increasingly used in clinical practice. 90 OCT angiography may be considered superior to FA owing to its ability to quantitatively measure retinal blood flow across separate layers, including the superficial capillary plexus and the deep capillary plexus, and can determine areas of decreased or absent retinal perfusion in the deep vascular plexus, localized to the cystoid spaces. 90,104 A comparison of a healthy eye and an eye with CME as presented by OCT and OCT angiography is shown in Fig.…”

“…Perfusion density of SCP and DVC was calculated through Mean's thresholding and binarization, according to previous studies ( Fig. 1) 17,18 . Perfusion density of CC was calculated through Phansalkar's thresholding (radius, 15 pixels) and binarization after removing from the analysis the CC directly beneath major superficial retinal vessels in order to eliminate potentially confounding shadow or projection artifacts (Fig.…”

“…Some instruments use their own proprietary software, these include Cirrus (AngioPlex software, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin, CA, USA), [ 5 , 10 ] AngioVue software (Optovue, Inc., Fremont, CA, USA), [ 11 , 12 ] and RS -3000 Advance (Nidek, Gamagori, Japan). [ 6 ] In the majority of the studies, however, images are exported and post-processed with a variety of different thresholding methods, including fixed cutoffs, [ 13 15 ] dynamic cutoff (e.g., mean, [ 9 , 16 , 17 ] ImageJ [National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD] default algorithm, [ 18 ] Otsu’s algorithm), [ 19 , 20 ] prototype software, [ 21 , 22 ] and more complex methods combining preprocessing filters and multilevel thresholds strategies. [ 23 26 ] It is still uncertain whether different algorithms lead to the same or, at least, similar results and findings from many studies could have been influenced by the algorithm utilized.…”
