Optical coherence tomography allows for the reliable identification of laryngeal epithelial dysplasia and for precise biopsy: A clinicopathological study of 61 patients undergoing microlaryngoscopy

Abstract: OCT allows for a fairly accurate assessment of benign and dysplastic laryngeal epithelial lesion and greatly facilitates the taking of precise biopsies. Laryngoscope, 2010.

“…Quantitative analysis of cellular and morphological features, e.g. nuclear size, nuclear density, number of nuclei per cell, nucleus/cytoplasm ratio, regularity of the cell layers, morphology of cells in a cell layer, and occurrence of cellular junctions, showed good agreement with histology, suggesting that LSM can identify pathologies in vivo (Just et al, 2006b). Confocal microscopy of the healthy human larynx revealed that the border between the superficial and basement cell layer is clearly visible, while the basement membrane itself cannot be detected (Fig.…”

“…4. Good correlation between LSM images and conventional histology were achieved in normal tissue, but also in benign and cancerous lesions of the larynx (Just et al, 2006b;Just et al, 2007b) and oropharynx (Just et al, 2008;White et al, 1999). 5.…”

“…(15) There have been studies investigating the use of OCT in other medical fields, such as cardiology, gastroenterology, (16) mastology, (17) pulmonology, urology, (18) and otolaryngology. (19) Because it enables high-resolution real-time imaging without exposure to radiation and because it is compatible with bronchoscopy, OCT has the potential to become a powerful tool in future lung research. (20) Minimally invasive visualization of tissue anatomy provides important information for the diagnosis and clinical management of a wide range of diseases.…”
