Optical bistable switching in a channel-rejection photonic-crystal directional coupler

Abstract: SUMMARYBy making use of the channel-rejection photoniccrystal directional coupler proposed by White, the configuration of an optical bistable switching element is attempted. By numerical simulation based on the finite-element time domain beam-propagation method, it is shown that a switching operation with a high extinction ratio should be achievable and that low-power operation is possible. An additional analysis using simple coupled-mode theory is carried out and the results are compared with those of the num… Show more
