The two isoelectronic bipyridyl derivatives [2,2'-bipyridyl]-3,3'-diamine and [2,2'-bipyridyl]-3,3'-diol are experimentally known to undergo very different excited-state double-proton-transfer processes, which result in fluorescence quantum yields that differ by four orders of magnitude. In a previous study, these differences were explained from a theoretical point of view, because of topographical features in the potential energy surface and the presence of conical intersections (CIs). Here, we analyze the photochemical properties of a new molecule, [2,2'-bipyridyl]-3-amine-3'-ol [BP(OH)(NH(2))], which is, in fact, a hybrid of the former two. Our density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations indicate that the double-proton-transfer process in the ground and first singlet pi-->pi* excited state in BP(OH)(NH(2)) presents features that are between those of their "parents". The presence of two CIs and the role they may play in the actual photochemistry of BP(OH)(NH(2)) and other bipyridyl derivatives are also discussed.

The main motivation for the development of digital data storage has been the improvement in play-back quality and the increase in storage capacity. In 1982 Philips and Sony introduced the first technically and economically successful system based on this-the compact disc (CD) and a compatible player. A very broad diversity of optical data recording formats are available today, and a difference is drawn between prerecorded, recordable, and rewritable media. This Review gives an overview of the systems used, the main features of production, and then concentrates on the properties of the organic dyes that are used in recordable systems. Dyestuffs chemistry has gained the reputation of having become a mature field of activity. Is this prejudice or a justified swan song for dyestuffs chemistry? When applications in optical data storage are considered, it is evident that even today progresses such as CD-R and DVD/R would not be feasible without functional dyes.

It has also been noted that the stabilizers for the longer-chain methine dyes were not as effective on monomethine or trimethine cyanine dyes in the same format (53). Work to stabilize the cyanine dyes for optical disk applications has the advantage of easy dye design for shorter wavelengths.…”

Spectral sensitizing dyes extend the wavelengths of light to which semiconductors or chemical reactions can respond. The silver halides in photography require special sensitizers to respond to blue, green, red, and infrared wavelengths. Colorless organic semiconductors in electrophotography require dyes to sensitize the electrophotographic response to red and infrared wavelengths. Infrared dyes in general serve both biological and data storage markets. Biological photochemical or photothermal effects require dyes that match the infrared transmission wavelengths of body tissue. Spectral sensitizing dyes are considered functional dyes to distinguish their photosensitizing actions from light absorbing (filtering) action.There are several broad classes of these dyes, eg, cyanine dyes, merocyanine dyes, azine dyes, polymethine dyes, xanthene dyes, etc.Uses for these dyes include photography, eletrophotography, lasers, optical disks, medicine and in solar cells. High purity dyes are required for most of these applications.
