“…The feature is predominantly formed by a signal detected in the fast TW and is assigned to the transitions from the ground state 4 I 9/2 to the levels belonging to the 4f 2 5d 1 configuration of Nd 3 þ . On the basis of experimentally observed spectral position of the first excitation maximum for Ce 3 þ in BMF when substituting the Ba 2 þ sites ( $260 nm, 38,460 cm À 1 ) [6,22,23], which agrees with the theoretical calculation [24], and the energy difference between the first 4f-5d transition of Nd 3 þ and Ce 3 þ (22,700 cm À 1 [26]), we estimate a first 4f-5d excitation maximum to be at about 164 nm (61,160 cm À 1 ). This is in excellent agreement with our experimental data.…”

“…On the other hand, the spectroscopic data documented in Refs. [6,22,23] allow estimating a Stokes shift for Ce 3 þ 5d-4f emission in BMF that is about 4400 cm À 1 . Assuming that the Stokes shift for the rare earth ions having very close ionic radius should be pretty much the same, we can approximately locate the first emission maximum related to the ground 4 I 9/2 (4f 3 ) terminating state as $ 176 nm (56,760 cm À 1 ).…”

“…The origin of the optical losses in the UV/VUV has not been cleared yet, but a correlation with the concentration of scattering centers in the VIS has been observed [7]. BaMgF 4 has been studied as a host crystal doped with transition metal and rare earth for ASSL applications [8,9]. Further, thin lms of BaMgF 4 have been investigated for memory applications, namely metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor eld-eect transistors [10,11].…”

“…According to previous reports, Na þ ions also incorporate into the matrix at the Barium site. 25 As a consequence, not only the charge compensation defects but also the available Ba 2þ sites for Yb 3þ ion can be modified and, therefore, its optical response. The lowest limit of the Na þ content in the codoped crystal has been estimated taking into account the percentage of Yb 3þ centers which are annihilated after Na codoping (42.5%).…”
