Optical and scintillation properties of Cd-doped ZnO film

Abstract: In the present study, we developed high crystalline quality Cd2+-doped ZnO (Cd:ZnO) scintillator by the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method to enhance the defect related emission in ZnO for α-ray detectors. In order to imitate the scintillator application, we investigated α-ray induced radio luminescence spectrum and emission bands peaking around 380 and 500 nm were observed, and the latter one was largely enhanced when compared with pure ZnO. Then, we optically coupled the sample with PMT R7600 by Silicone grea… Show more

“…The intrinsic luminescence represents free-exciton luminescence, self-trapped exciton (STE) luminescence, Auger free luminescence and self-activation luminescence. The free exciton luminescence is observed in wide band-gap semiconductor materials having direct transitions; common examples are ZnO 4143) and GaN. 44) Scintillation due to free exciton is characterized by fast scintillation decay with a sharp emission peak in the spectrum.…”

“…In addition, Zn has a low cross-section to γ-rays and neutrons. Up to now, we have developed some ZnO film scintillators, 132) and have demonstrated α-ray real time imaging by using ZnO. 133) …”

“…On the other hand, those consisting of light elements are appropriate for measuring charged particles such as α-rays since the sensitivity for background X-rays and γ-rays must be low. (4) In addition, RE ions are often included in the host material in order to enhance the luminescence properties. (5) In this study, we have synthesized undoped and RE-doped 12CaO·7Al 2 O 3 (RE:C12A7) single crystals and characterized the properties for scintillator applications.…”

“…(20) The lifetime (about 4 ns) of the UV emission band is fairly shorter than that (about 220 ns) of the main emission band in a commercially available Ag-doped ZnS scintillator. (18) To fabricate a ZnO scintillator emitting only UV light, ZnO (purity: 4N) phosphors doped with impurities such as CuO, Al 2 O 3 , In 2 O 3 , and Ga 2 O 3 were prepared using the SPS method.…”
