Optical and scintillation characteristics of Tb-doped SrY2O4 single crystals

Hiromi Kimura,
Hiroyuki Fukushima,
Kenichi Watanabe
et al.

Abstract: The optical and X-and γ-ray induced scintillation characteristics of Tb-doped SrY2O4 single crystals using the floating zone technique were evaluated. Under the UV and X-rays, the several lines in the range of 350 to 650 nm were observed in all the prepared crystals, which were attributed to the Tb3+ ions. In the pulse area spectra of a 137Cs γ-ray source, the full-energy absorption peak was conformed using a 1.0% Tb-doped crystal, and the light yield estimated to be 12,000 photons/MeV.

“…One possible interpretation for this is that the excitation density is far larger for scintillation than for common PL; thus, interactions between the multiple excitation states are involved, which would reduce the luminescence decay time. Similar behaviors have been observed in some material systems 39,40). Figure7shows the TSL glow curves of the undoped and Tb-doped samples after X-ray irradiation of 10 mGy.…”
