The ongoing social and ecological crises create urgency in academia and elsewhere to devise actionable problem-solving knowledge to tackle sustainability challenges.Transdisciplinary research (TDR) represents a problem-solving methodology for sustainability problems. TDR requires researchers to get out in the real world and engage with other societal actors to jointly produce such problem-solving knowledge for research to have a societal impact. This radical process of doing "science with society" instead of "science for society" is becoming more urgent and relevant. However, a transdisciplinary (TD) researcher faces challenges: often, institutions have limited readiness for facilitating TDR, a researcher has to juggle the roles of an academic and changemaker simultaneously and needs new ways of doing science. The research process requires enough manoeuvring space to incorporate reflexivity, adaptiveness, and emergence based on the research context. The research uses case studies, interviews, reflections, and document analysis from two finished and one ongoing TDR PhDs in sustainability science and connects them with the TD literature. Based on previous and ongoing TDR by early-stage researchers (ESRs), this article identifies and discusses six TDR challenges ESRs in sustainability sciences might face.

Nachhaltigkeit ist ein gesamtgesellschaftliches Transformationsprojekt. Eine intensivere soziologische Analyse ist daher unverzichtbar für das Verständnis von Veränderungsprozessen, zugleich werden hiermit Grundlagenfragen der Disziplin aufgeworfen. Die Reihe »Soziologie der Nachhaltigkeit« versammelt Publikationen, die Themen nachhaltiger Gesellschaftsentwicklung aus einer spezifisch soziologischen Blickrichtung untersuchen. Das inhaltliche Spektrum reicht von konkreten Untersuchungsgegenständen (wie etwa nachhaltiger Stadtentwicklung) über nachhaltigkeitsbezogene Grundfragen (wie etwa Zukunft, Wissen oder Macht) bis hin zur Reflektion und Verortung von Nachhaltigkeit selbst. Eine soziologische Blickrichtung wird in dieser Reihe weit verstanden -sie umfasst interaktions-, praxis-sowie gesellschaftstheoretische Ansätze und reicht von empirischer Sozialforschung bis hin zu sozialpsychologischen Perspektiven. Nachhaltigkeit und Normativität, sozialer Wandel und Gestaltung sowie schließlich Reflexivität zweiter Ordnung sind zentrale übergreifende Elemente einer solchen Soziologie der Nachhaltigkeit. Die Reihe versteht sich als Rahmen für disziplinär-soziologische Publikationen, um aus dieser Disziplinarität heraus in inter-und transdisziplinären Dialog zu treten und so das Spektrum soziologischer Analyse für das Verstehen, Erklären und Gestalten von Nachhaltigkeit zu nutzen.

Calls for transformative change and participatory modes of knowledge production demand researchers to assume new roles. This paper synthesizes the literature on knowledge co-production and researcher roles to explore challenges for researchers involved in transdisciplinary environmental management projects. Our research methods combine a scoping review and reflections on personal experiences with three transdisciplinary projects. To conceptualize researcher roles in transdisciplinary knowledge co-production, we distinguish between three spaces: knowledge, formal policy, and stakeholder. Knowledge co-production requires collaboration between actors from different spaces and integration of diverse knowledge sources and types.Depending on whether researchers adopt knowledge-oriented, change-oriented or intermediating roles, they will experience different challenges. When researchers combine knowledge development with change-oriented and/or intermediating roles, they encounter new challenges, such as, maintaining independence or objectivity. To assist researchers in transdisciplinary projects, we conclude with a checklist of four elements to reflect upon: orientation, norms and values, expectations and resources.
