Opportunities and Challenges of Applying Cognitive Process Dimensions to Map-Based Learning and Alternate Assessment

Abstract: In education, taxonomies that define cognitive processes describe what a learner does with the content. Cognitive process dimensions (CPDs) are used for a number of purposes, such as in the development of standards, assessments, and subsequent alignment studies. Educators consider CPDs when developing instructional activities and materials. CPDs may provide one way to track students’ progress toward acquiring increasingly complex knowledge. There are a number of terms used to characterize CPDs, such as depth-o… Show more

“…DOK refers to the complexity of knowledge required to respond to an item correctly and the level of DOK that each item demands should be aligned with the cognitive complexity of assessed standards and benchmarks (Webb, 1999(Webb, , 2006. Although there are different criteria and taxonomies for classifying items in terms of cognitive complexity (Bechard et al, 2021), how TE items and MC items function in each level of Webb's DOK were examined in this study since Webb's DOKs are used commonly for developing items in statewide K-12 educational tests (e.g., Florida Department of Education, 2021; Nebraska Department of Education, 2021;North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, 2022). Webb (1999Webb ( , 2006 classified DOK in four levels: (a) recall, (b) skill/concept, (c) strategic thinking, (d) extended thinking.…”
