Most of the enterprise information networks (EIN) have faced challenges during tough economic time. Especially during the economical slow growth, it causes the enterprises to tighten their belts in all areas of spending, including network maintenance. Here, we have viewed EIN as a flexible topology, where each node in EIN seeks the opportunity to join a cluster with high association with its nodes. Thus, EIN characterizes as an opportunistic network from physical infrastructure, where the topology is viewed as an opportunistic topology. By opportunistic topology, we exploit the short-term knowledge of current traffic flow among nodes at the backbone to change the existing topology. We have proposed few redesign operations to change the existing topology into an opportunistic topology. We have proposed a new factor called an opportunistic factor ranging from +1 to -1, to measure the change in traffic at the backbone before and after the redesign operations. We have modeled the opportunistic clustering as an optimization problem and utilized Simulated Annealing to search for the best opportunistic topology for the given EIN. Our simulation results reveal with positive opportunistic factor 0.4 to 0.7 in move operation and 0.05 to 0.1 in swap operation that it shows gain in the available backbone bandwidth.

a b s t r a c tSpecialized ad hoc networks of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been playing increasingly important roles in applications for homeland defense and security. Common resource virtualization techniques are mainly designed for stable networks; they fall short in providing optimal performance in more dynamic networks-such as mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs)-due to their highly dynamic and unstable nature. We propose application of Opportunistic Resource Utilization Networks (Oppnets), a novel type of MANETs, for UAV ad hoc networking. Oppnets provide middleware to facilitate building flexible and adaptive distributed systems that provide all kinds of resources or services to the requesting application via a helper mechanism. We simulated a homeland defense use case for Oppnets that involves detecting a suspicious watercraft. Our simulation compares performance of an Oppnet with a baseline case in which no Oppnet is used. The simulation results show that Oppnets are a promising framework for high-performance ad hoc UAV networking. They provide excellent performance even under imperfect (and realistic) conditions, such as a less invasive use of helpers, denial of help by some of the candidate helpers, and imperfect detection capabilities of Oppnet components.

We have viewed an enterprise information network as a flexible topology, where each node seeks the opportunity to join a cluster having high association with its nodes to reduce the external bandwidth and thereby producing less carbon. The opportunistic clustering is modeled as an optimization problem and we utilized heuristics such as genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) to search for the best opportunistic topology. We have proposed redesign operations such as move and swap nodes to change the existing topology into an opportunistic topology. Also, we defined an opportunistic factor ranging from +1 to -1 to measure the gain in bandwidth and the amount of reduction in carbon emissions. Our simulation results demonstrate positive opportunistic factor in individual clusters from 0.4 to 0.7 in move operation, thereby showing a total bandwidth gain of 21% and 19% within GA and SA, respectively. In the swap operation, the opportunistic factor reached a maximum of 0.3, thereby showing a bandwidth gain of 9.7% and 5.1% within GA and SA, respectively. It is also observed that the optimization within GA outperforms SA in offsetting carbon emission with a maximum of 22%.
