Opportunistic feeding in Sceloporus horridus from Jalisco, Mexico

Abstract: Based on a sample of 17 adult specimens of Sceloporus horridus taken near Autlan, Jalisco, Mexico in May 1974 just before and just after the first rainfall of the year, we present the first published data on the food habits of this lizard. Important prey item taxa were Homoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera, and Isoptera. The absence of Homoptera and Orthoptera, and the concomitant greater relative importance of Isoptera and Hymenoptera in the diet after the rain than before indicates opportunistic fee… Show more

“…Carnivorous lizards sometimes ingest leaves, blades of grass, or fragments of them in very small quantities, but such ingestion seems to be accidental or incidental to ingestion of prey, as is ingestion of sand, dirt, wood, and other objects in small amounts (e.g. Dixon & Medica, 1966;Medica & Arndt, 1976;Van Wyk, 2000).…”

“…Most species of Sceloporus are insectivorous (e.g., Dixon and Medica, 1966;Tanner and Wright, 1973;Whitaker and Maser, 1981;Goldberg and Bursey, 1996). However, substantial plant intake has been observed in three species, S. poinsettii among them, in arid northern Mexico in time of extreme prey scarcity (Medica and Arndt, 1976;Barbault et al, 1985). Plants have been observed to exceed 10% of the volume of stomach contents only twice in any species of Sceloporus from a single location (Barbault et al, 1985).…”
