Suicide was the main source of death from external causes in Spain in 2020, with 3,941 cases. The importance of identifying those mental disorders that influenced hospital readmissions will allow us to manage the health care of suicidal behavior. The feature selection of each hospital in this region was carried out by applying Machine learning (ML) and traditional statistical methods. The results of the characteristics that best explain the readmissions of each hospital after assessment by the psychiatry specialist are presented. Adjustment disorder, alcohol abuse, depressive syndrome, personality disorder, and dysthymic disorder were selected for this region. The most influential methods or characteristics associated with suicide were benzodiazepine poisoning, suicidal ideation, medication poisoning, antipsychotic poisoning, and suicide and/or self-harm by jumping. Suicidal behavior is a concern in our society, so the results are relevant for hospital management and decision-making for its prevention.

Aims: Opioid misuse is an epidemic in the United States and globally, with adolescents affected by negative consequences including overdoses and deaths. Understanding how mental health and substance use relate to specific types of opioid use is thus important. Methods: Data from the 2019 Connecticut Youth Risk Behavior Survey were analyzed. Chi squares and adjusted odds ratios were computed to relate demographic variables, mental health, and substance use measures to misuse of prescription pain medications with and without heroin use, as compared to neither . Results: Among 1,931 high-school respondents, 8.8 % (n=180) reported prescription pain medication misuse (PPMM+), and 1.4 % (n=28) also reported using heroin (PPMM/HU+). PPMM+ was associated with being female while PPMM/HU+ was associated with being non-White and male. Poorer mental health was associated with PPMM+, and suicidality measures were strongly related to PPMM/HU+. Use of other substances was reported with PPMM+ and PPMM/HU+, with use of vapor products, including on school grounds, particularly linked to the latter. Conclusions: PPMM+ and PPMM/HU+ are associated with suicidality and substance use among adolescents, with suicidality particularly related to PPMM/HU+. Having access to and using substances on school property suggests the need for school-based and other interventions.

Background Suicide attempt and opioid misuse continue to be major behavioral health challenges among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The aim of the study is to evaluate the mediating and moderating role that social support (SS) plays in their association among AI/AN high-school students in New Mexico (NM). Methods An aggregated NM Youth Resiliency and Risk Survey (NM-YRRS, 2009-2019: odd years) dataset was used. Multivariable logistic regression modeling and mediation analysis were conducted while adjusting for confounding variables. Results Overall, 12.0 and 14.0% of AI/AN students reported opioid misuse and suicide attempt, respectively. The adjusted odds ratio of suicide attempt in students with high SS relative to low SS who misused opioids was 0.43 (p-value = 0.007). The effect of high SS relative to low SS among males who misused opioids was more pronounced (AOR = 0.24, p-value < 0.0001) compared to females (AOR = 0.43, p-value = 0.007). Relative to low SS, high SS was protective for suicide attempt among AI/AN students who misused opioids and attended school in off-reservation (AOR = 0.42, p-value = 0.012) communities, rural communities (AOR = 0.44, p = 0.040), and in communities that are both rural and off-reservation (AOR = 0.39, p = 0.035). Overall, 23.64, and 41.05% of the association between opioid misuse, and suicide attempt was mediated and moderated by SS, respectively. The mediation effect of SS was lowest for rural, on-reservation schools. Conclusion More resources need to be allocated to rural on-reservation schools to enhance social support. The study highlights key insights into the significant role SS plays in promoting health and mitigating the association between opioid misuse and suicide attempt.
