Ophthalmic and Neuro-ophthalmic Manifestations of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Abstract: Purpose: To describe a case of inflammatory chorioretinopathy and Adie's syndrome possibly associated with COVID-19. Methods: Observational case report. Results: A 51-year-old woman developed fever, cough, and headache followed by retro-ocular pain and reading impairment. She tested positive for SARS-COV-2 infection by qualitative real-time reversetranscriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction. The slit-lamp and funduscopic exam revealed abnormal pupillary response and yellowish creamy deep chorioretinal lesions, whi… Show more

“…Furthermore, there is some dispute as to whether SARS-CoV-2 affects the retina and choroid, taking into consideration the fact that ACE2, which is a receptor for the virus, has been identified in these structures [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. After the outbreak of the pandemic, retinal and vascular pathologies in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 were rapidly reported [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…In previously published studies, connections between rare ocular conditions such as inflammatory chorioretinopathy, serpiginous choroiditis, central retinal artery occlusion, optic neuritis, and impending central retinal vein occlusion have also been described [ 15 , 16 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. All of these disorders have been reported as single cases and have not been observed on a larger scale.…”

“…Unilateral panuveitis in a 60 years old woman with definitive diagnosis of COVID-19, drew the attention of Benito and colleagues to the linkage between them [32]. Also, as we reviewed the studies on ophthalmic manifestations of COVID-19, encountered the interesting association with white dot syndromes (WDS) spectra [44].…”

“…Ortiz-Seller et al [ 73 ] described a case of inflammatory chorioretinopathy with coexisting Adie syndrome occurring in a 51-year-old patient diagnosed with COVID-19 who reported retroocular pain and reading impairment 2 days after the onset of disease symptoms. A fundus examination revealed numerous yellowish, creamy, deep peripheral chorioretinal lesions, and OCT demonstrated bilateral areas of impaired capillary perfusion, inner retinal thinning, and focal disruptions of the outer retinal layers.…”
