Operator Workload in the UH-60A Black Hawk: Crew Results vs. Tawl Model Predictions

Abstract: An empirical study was undertaken to collect real-time workload estimates of pilots and copilots performing a resupply mission in a UH-60A flight simulator. Overall and peak workload (OW and PW) ratings were collected for twelve mission segments. These ratings were compared with OW and PW values predicted by the Task Analysis/Workload (TAWL) simulation model. High correlations were found between TAWL-based predictions and crew results for OW ( r = 0.82 to 0.95; p < .01). Lower correlations were found for PW… Show more

“…They also observed a correlation of 0.57 between the model's predictions and subjects' workload ratings. lavecchia, Linton, Bittner, and Byers (1989) reported a correlation of 0.82 between the Task AnalysislWorkload (TAWL) simulation model's predictions and the ratings of Black Hawk helicopter pilots performing a simulated resupply mission. Despite these successes, the labor-intensive nature of taskanalytic techniques is likely to limit their application.…”

“…Computer support has been developed to perform all of the data base management and model execution functions needed to use the methodology called the TAWL Operator Simulation System (TOSS). Iavecchia, Linton, Bittner, and Byers (1989) have conducted an initial validation of the TAWL methodology.…”

“…During the present workload analysis of the UH-60A, TOSS was used to implement a regression equation derived from the data reported by Iavecchia et al (1989), to scale the OW predicted by TAWL into the 0-100 range used for OW. For all mission segments described in this report, TOSS computed the predicted OW using the following equation:…”
