Operative Treatment of Acute Displaced Intra-Articular Calcaneus Fractures

Abstract: A retrospective study of 18 operatively treated calcaneal fractures was conducted. The fractures were all type II and type III fractures according to the classification system of Crosby et al. The average follow-up was 32 months and consisted of subjective and objective criteria. The findings were compared with the results of nonoperative treatment reported by Crosby et al. The findings suggests that type II fractures have a similar outcome when either operative or nonoperative treatment is used. Type III frac… Show more

“…Our results also meet the international standards [4,6,16,18,25]. Among authors using the Creighton-Nebraska system, Crosby and Fitzgibbons report of 50% very good and 30% good outcomes, while Monsey et al had 30% very good and 26% good results in an homogenous group of patients with Sanders type II fractures [6,18].…”

“…Toutefois, la plupart des auteurs sont d'accord pour affirmer que le traitement orthopédique des fractures dépla-cées donne un mauvais résultat [12][13][14]. Aminian et al [4] préconisent le traitement chirurgical pour les fractures déplacées par réduction à foyer ouvert et fixation interne (voie d'abord latérale mini-invasive) après dissipation du gonflement du pied et de la cheville.…”

“…[12][13][14] However, most authors agree that nonoperative treatment of displaced fractures yields poor results and hence open reduction should be done in such cases. [15][16][17] However, in severely comminuted fractures, consideration may be given to primary subtalar fusion to eliminate the need for secondary surgery as these fractures are universally associated with subsequent subtalar arthritis.…”
