“…Following plastic operations of the tube and uterus, 5 per cent of women who conceive are said to develop an ectopic pregnancy (Jones, 1966). Between 1947 and 1967, 0.6 per cent of women in the United States who presented with an ectopic pregnancy gave a history of having had a previous tubal ligation (Breen, 1970); whereas in 1972 the percentage reported to have had a previous tubal ligation increased to 5.2 per cent (Harralson et al, 1972). The latter percentage is based on small numbers (5 out of 96 patients), but suggests that tubal surgery has recently become an important cause of ectopic pregnancy.…”

“…Since 1970 there has been an increase in the incidence of this condition (Report on Hospital Inpatient Enquiry, 1964‐1972). The cause of the increase has been attributed to the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD; Beral, 1975); studies elsewhere have implicated the progesterone only pill (Bergsjo et al; 1974) and previous tubal sterilisation (Harralson et al , 1972) as predisposing factors. However, during this same period there has also been an increase in the incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease.…”
