Operative cholangiography with an antiseptic contrast solution

Abstract: A new antiseptic contrast material, composed of sodium diatrizoate-meglumine diatrizoate and PVP-iodine solutions, was prepared and tested for operative cholangiography. It was tested in vitro, and in vivo in dogs and displayed satisfactory contrast radiologic features, and strong and rapid bactericidal action without detectable side effects. It seems to be promising in reducing the risk of bacterial spread during cholangiography.

“…Oral, percutaneous, surgical, or laparoscopic guided cholecystography and cholangiography have been performed experimentally and clinically to test contrast medium, or to reveal gallbladder displacement (e.g. with diaphragmatic hernia) and bile outflow obstruction 7–10 . Intravenous cholangiography was also used as a diagnostic tool but the information gained with this technique is likely to be limited.…”
