Operations Research Models and the Management of Agricultural and Forestry Resources: A Review and Comparison

Abstract: Operations research (OR) has helped people to understand and manage agricultural and forestry resources during the last 40 years. We analyzed its use to assess the past performance of OR models in this field and to highlight current problems and future directions of research and applications. Thus, in the agriculture part, we concentrate on planning problems at the farm and regional-sector level, environmental implications, risk and uncertainty issues, multiple criteria, and the formulation of livestock ration… Show more

“…While geographical logic can be used to accommodate these linkages, more often the functional response models require a direct quantitative relationship to management activities and changes in forests. As was noted in [10], continued efforts in these researchable areas are necessary as the values and needs of society change.…”

“…It was noted nearly a decade ago [10] that these were viable research areas. The risk of natural disasters (for example, fire) affecting resources continues to prompt research in this area [60,96,106].…”

“…Authors such as Arce (1997), Contreras and Chung (2007), Flisberg et al (2007), Seixas (1986), Soares et al (2003) and Weintraub and Romero (2006) developed studies in which they present methods for applied use of geotechnology and operations research tools in forestry planning, obtaining good optimization results in several activities, including log hauling, determination of optimal routes and optimal mill setup sites, distance minimization and transportation cost reduction.…”

“…Also, MCA adds value with regards to other decision support methods because of its ability to make people reveal their preferences and reach compromises, facilitating the achievement of more acceptable outcomes. Multi-criteria methods have a long tradition of use in solving problems related to agriculture and forestry (Romero and Rehman, 1989;Hayashi, 2000;Weintraub and Romero, 2006) and have been used for the construction of composite sustainability indicators; see Díaz-Balteiro and Romero (2004) for an application based on goal-programming.…”
