Operationalism: An Interpretation of the Philosophy of Ancient Greek Geometry

Abstract: I present a systematic interpretation of the foundational purpose of constructions in ancient Greek geometry. I argue that Greek geometers were committed to an operationalist foundational program, according to which all of mathematics—including its entire ontology and epistemology—is based entirely on concrete physical constructions. On this reading, key foundational aspects of Greek geometry are analogous to core tenets of 20th-century operationalist/positivist/constructivist/intuitionist philosophy of scienc… Show more

“…These tasks, closely linked to 12-step recovery, are adaptable to other therapeutic methods, aiding in relapse prevention and cognitive-behavioural therapy. Approaching problematic sexual behaviour as an addiction allows for the extension of established therapeutic methods such as cognitive-behavioral approaches, motivational enhancement therapy, emotional awareness, and mindfulness-based practices, commonly coupled with 12-step recovery groups [25,26] .…”

“…I note that this interpretation refers to the construction of right angles at various positions and it is therefore especially fitting with constructivist readings of the Elements (see below, note 27). See the comprehensive discussion in Blåsjö 2022.…”

“…Euclid seems never to question the universal replicability of his constructions, and many scholars have advanced hypotheses on the role of constructive schemata in the process of universal generalization of the theorems. The most refined and subtle attempts towards a constructivist reading of the Elements have been made by Ferreirós (2016, 130), Sidoli (2018b, 434), and Blåsjö (2022).…”
