“…The findings showed that the capacity-building program exerted individual effects on the motivation for conducting further OR and improved partnerships between individuals, which is similar to the results of previous evaluations [8,17]. The study also demonstrated that the capacity-building program provided empirical experience of evidence-based TB-control programs and policies.…”

“…Numbers of publications and use of research in policy and program improvements have been highlighted as indicators in the evaluation of OR capacity-building programs [8,9]. As experience plays a major role in knowledge development [10], in-depth assessment of participants’ experience of the benefits of TB-related OR capacity-building programs is a critical evaluation domain.…”

“…5 We are currently attempting to do this: we are trying out new paradigms of training; we are assessing how best to systematically measure the effects of research on infl uencing policy and practice and improving health outcomes; 6 and we have developed a network of research alumni and are annually assessing what happens to the participants in the context of operational research after completion of the training courses. 4 In conclusion, we fi rmly believe that this standardised approach, with rigorous monitoring and evaluation and the testing of new initiatives, is a way forward because it provides accountability and measurement of effi cacy of the operational research training programmes. Furthermore, it allows donors and other supporters to see whether the outputs justify the inputs and whether there is value for money.…”

“…2 We are now also applying the DOTS principles to operational research capacity building courses, where participants learn about operational research while at the same time doing an operational research project. 3,4 Participant selection (case finding)…”

“…1 Strong academic mentorship is a key feature of the operational research (OR) courses run by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and Mé-decins Sans Frontières (MSF). 2,3 The OR courses consist of three separate, interlinked modules each of 5 or 6 days' duration: Module 1 focuses on developing a research protocol, including ethics considerations; Module 2 focuses on electronic quality-assured data collection and analysis using open access software (EpiData, Odense, Denmark); and Module 3 focuses on preparing a paper for submission (with the participant as first author) to a peer-reviewed journal and linking research to policy and practice. The teaching format for all three modules includes lectures, small group break-out sessions with mentors, and plenary sessions where participants present their work to the group and receive feedback from mentors and peers.…”
