River cruise shipping is a tourism sectors which tends to have rapid growth. This study analyzes the structural properties and connectivity of the river cruise network and cruise ports by using complex network analysis. By analyzing 257 river cruise voyages operated by 5 cruise lines in Southeast Asia, this study shows that the network consists of 31 cruise ports, connected by 94 cruise routes. A small number of ports play a central role in connecting to other ports in the network. The network has a short average path length and a low clustering coefficient. Siem Reap, Koh Chen, Ho Chi Minh City, Halong Bay, and Thanh Pho Ninh Binh are hubs with high connectivity. Siem Reap also plays an intermediary role, and has high reachability with other ports in the network, with the highest betweenness and closeness centralities. The findings of this study are useful for cruise lines and cruise port authorities for improvement of their operations and service network. The continuous growth of the cruise industry has brought with it a series of threats. Among them is the management of the seasonality of cruise activity in order to address its negative effects. This study examines the monthly cruise passenger movement distribution among a group of harbors located in the northeast sector of the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea with the aim of determining the existence of seasonality patterns in cruise traffic and their relationship between different regions. A database of cruise passenger movements during the period from 2007 to 2019 among 24 harbors forms the backbone of the empirical analysis. First, the seasonal variation index of each harbor was calculated to determine the seasonality pattern. Second, a cluster analysis was performed to classify harbors into clusters with analogous seasonality patterns. The results reveal that seasonality of cruise activity in a consolidated region is explained by own factors of the region, but also by an induced seasonality imported from neighboring cruise regions.

Optimization of Container Shipping Network Reconfiguration under RCEP

Due to its advantages of large transportation volume and low transportation cost, container shipping has become an important transportation mode in current international trade. The recovery of the shipping industry in 2021 and the signing of RCEP make the reconfiguration and optimization of the container shipping network a very important task at present. The network service capability is an important factor affecting the container shipping network. Based on the complex network theory, the coefficients of port location, the importance of distance and route among ports are taken as the service capacity reconfiguration coefficients of the global container shipping network. A max-min mixed integer model is established for global container shipping network reconfiguration. A sort of communication-reducing conjugate gradient method based on Krylov Subspace (CR-CG-KS) is proposed to reduce the reconfiguration computation. The results show that the global container shipping network does not need large-scale reconfiguration but requires small-scale changes to optimize the network feature vector centrality and make the network more balanced and stable. This study is beneficial for business managers to proactively respond to the future development of the shipping network and improve the operational efficiency of the global container shipping network.
