Opéra-comique on the Eve of Revolution: Dalayrac's Sargines and the Development of “Heroic” Comedy

Abstract: This article draws upon archival evidence to trace the development of opéra-comique—and its broader political import—in the final years of the ancien régime. It focuses in particular on the opening of the Salle Favart, the first new and custom-built theater for the Comédie-Italienne, in 1783.
