OpenTestBed: Poor Man's IoT Testbed

Abstract: Testbeds are a key tool for evaluating and benchmarking IoT solutions. Several public testbeds are being run by institutions around the world. These are built with a variety of tools, and are typically "heavy" installations with dedicated wiring, hard installations, switches, servers, and a reservation and experiment management back-end. To complement those, we have taken the opposite, minimalistic, approach in designing the OpenTestBed. The OpenTestBed features all the tools necessary to build a testbed from … Show more

“…We use the OpenTestbed [ 29 ] to extract the performance of the OpenWSN stack with the extensions detailed in Section 4 . This section demonstrates the architecture of the OpenTestbed experimental setup ( Section 5.1 ) and the methodology for the experiment design and performance evaluation ( Section 5.2 ).…”

“…In [ 10 ], authors describe OpenTestBed; an open-source testbed, with comparatively cheap setup costs, replicable with its open-source and off-the-shelf nature of its components. It is simple in its nature by generically logging information through serial connections to best facilitate a variety of tests.…”

“…The Network Gateway may run at the testbed infrastructure and be physically connected to the serial port of IUTs, or run at OpenBenchmark premises and communicate with the IUTs over an emulated serial port. This emulated serial port is provided through the software component of the companion OpenTestbed project [2], which transports the serial data over the MQTT protocol. OpenBenchmark provides the necessary integration and provisioning of the OpenTestbed software on supported testbeds, such that this complexity is hidden from the user.…”
