Opening of Circumaxillary Sutures by Alternate Rapid Maxillary Expansions and Constrictions

Abstract: Objective: To analyze quantitatively the circumaxillary suture opening after alternate rapid maxillary expansions and constrictions (Alt-RAMEC). Materials and Methods: Twelve inbred cats were randomly grouped into two equal groups for 1 week of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) (1 mm/day) or 5 weeks of Alt-RAMEC (1 mm/day). At the end of the experiment, the craniofacial skeleton of each cat was harvested. Each circumaxillary suture was then probed at three sites with a 0.5-mm pointed periodontal probe. A smooth … Show more

“…They were classified into four groups according to the kind of articulation and their running pattern. 24 Thus, we had: (1) sutures running sagittally and articulating directly to maxilla (nasomaxillary sutures); (2) sutures running coronally and articulating directly to maxilla (frontomaxillary suture and zygomaticomaxillary suture); (3) sutures running sagittally and articulating indirectly to maxilla (internasal suture, zygomaticotemporal suture); and (4) sutures running coronally and articulating directly to maxilla (frontonasal suture) (Figure 1). …”

“…In order to ensure that the same point was used on the subsequent CT scans, ie, between T0 and T1, and because opening varied along the length and thickness of each suture, 24 the middle site of sutures was chosen as the recording point for each suture.…”

“…: Il n'y a aucune preuve convaincante que l'expansion palatine associée à la protraction maxillaire facilite le mouvement de la partie médiane de la face vers l'avant. Eric Jein-Wein Liou [38,83], de Taiwan, encourage l'ouverture et la fermeture de la suture palatine médiane 4 à 6 fois, pour desserrer les sutures médio-faciales. Pour moi, cette procédure semble assez drastique étant donné que l'action proposée affecte l'ensemble des os crâniens.…”

“…As sutures unite bones and play a role as growth sites in the growing skull, it could be assumed that a normal growing child has his or her natural osteotomy sites for distracting bones away from each other by applying orthopaedic force [1]. The circumaxillary sutures were classified into four groups (Table 3) [13]. Improvement in facial esthetics before puberty has a positive impact on the psychosocial development of young children.…”

“…There was no h/o trauma and parafunctional habits and systemic illness. Clinical and radiological examination revealed maxillary retrognathism, mandibular prognathism, potentially competent lips, concave profile, class three molar relation, diminished mento labial sulcus, permanent dentition with retained 53 and clinically missing 13 (Table 2). Following this the patient was diagnosed to have skeletal class III malocclusion (case 1) with vertical growth pattern, skeletal class III malocclusion with hyopodontia and microdontia (case 2).…”
