Open weather and climate science in the digital era

Abstract: Abstract. The need for open science has been recognized by the communities of meteorology and climate science. While these domains are mature in terms of applying digital technologies, the implementation of open science methodologies is less advanced. In a session on “Weather and Climate Science in the Digital Era” at the 14th IEEE International eScience Conference domain specialists and data and computer scientists discussed the road towards open weather and climate science. Roughly 80 % of the studies presen… Show more

“…Open science practices and tools satisfy needs brought by science and technology evolution and advancement as well as a rapidly growing interest in interdisciplinary collaboration (Ramachandran et al, 2021). Many Earth science disciplines, including hydrology, have cemented the demand and necessity for open science (Blumenthal et al, 2014;de Vos et al, 2020;Ferrari et al, 2018;Powers and Hampton, 2019;Tai and Robinson, 2018). There are even community-driven efforts entirely dedicated to open science in the form of research projects (e.g., Beck et al, 2020;Lowndes et al, 2017, Armeni et al, 2021 and conferences (e.g., OpenAIRE's Mission and Vision, 2021).…”

“…Consequently, we suggest incorporating FAIR (Wilkinson et al, 2016;Garcia et al, 2020) and CARE (Carroll et al, 2020;Walter et al, 2020) data standards into open hydrology research. FAIR data standards were developed to improve machine readability of data and ultimately increase research reproducibility.…”

“…Open science is and see open as a path to prosperity (e.g., Baker et al, 2020;Jeppesen, 2020;UNESCO, 2021; WMO Data Conference, 2021; COPDESS; European Commission). In many scientific disciplines, community-driven research papers have cemented the demand and necessity for open science (Armeni et al, 2020;Beck et al, 2020;Blumenthal et al, 2014;de Vos et al, 2020;Ferrari et al, 2018;Hampton et al, 2015;Mwelwa et al, 2020;Onie, 2020;Powers & Hampton, 2019;Tai & Robinson, 2018;Zuiderwijk & Hinnant, 2019), research projects (e.g. Beck et al, 2020;Lowndes et al, 2017), and conferences (e.g., (About FOSTER, 2021;About ORION, 2017;OPEN SCIENCE FAIR, 2021;Mavrantoni, 2021).…”
