Open Strings from Script N = 4 Super Yang-Mills

Abstract: Exploiting insights on strings moving in pp-wave backgrounds, we show how open strings emerge from N = 4 SU(N) Yang-Mills theory as fluctuations around certain states carrying R-charge of order N . These states are dual to spherical D3-branes of AdS 5 × S 5 and we reproduce the spectrum of small fluctuations of these states from Yang-Mills theory. We discuss the emergence of the G 2 light degrees of freedom expected when G such D3-branes nearly coincide. The open strings running between the branes can be quant… Show more

“…For simplicity we will usually take all of the impurities to be a second complex matrix Y . This idea was first applied in [47] to reproduce the spectrum of small fluctuations of giant gravitons [48]. The description was then further developed in [49][50][51][52][53].…”

“…g 4 Y M ), the first quantum corrections to the anomalous dimension appear at two-loops (we can also check that the 6-vertex connecting 3 fields in one operator with 3 fields in another gives a 2-loop graph). Since the composite operators we are going to use are in the adjoint of U(N ), the computation is very similar as the open string on giant in the N = 4 SYM [34]. We split the computation as follows: As we see from (B.2), each propagator for composite fields (AB) contributes with a factor of N , producing a total contribution of N N +J−1 .…”

“…The BMN correspondence can be extended to open strings [122,123,113,124]. It was shown in [113] that the D − -branes located at the origin, descend from supersymmetric AdS embeddings in AdS 5 ×S 5 through the Penrose limit; these originate from the near-horizon limit of supersymmetric intersections of the Dp-branes with a stack of D3-branes.…”
