Open-Source Pattern Creation Tool for Medical Extended Reality Image Quality Assessment

Brendan Collins,
Ryan Beams,
Miguel Lago

Abstract: The potential for extended reality devices in medicine has recently grown. In order to approve these devices for medical use, they must be evaluated on many characteristics to ensure safety and effectiveness. One of the most important evaluations is the quality of the device's display, known as image quality, especially for medical applications (Zhao et al., 2023). The image quality evaluation of virtual and augmented reality devices requires the creation of a variety of different test patterns. These test pat… Show more

“…The dot array is rendered and centered on the Meta Quest 3 and VIVE XR Elite HMDs using an FDA developed WebXR-based test pattern generation tool. 17,18 Geometric distortion measurement on the digital content shown on the right eyepiece follows the eye rotation method described by Penczek et al 10 Figure 5A,C shows the measured 2D position of the digital dot array rendered at a virtual distance 72.3 cm away from the LMD rotation center. The 2D distortion map shown in Figure 5B demonstrates negligible distortion of less than 1 mm on the non-VST digital content rendered on the Meta Quest 3 HMD.…”
