Open Source Hardware Startups and Their Communities

Abstract: This chapter examines open source communities as distinct environments for distributed innovation. Focusing on open source 3D printing communities, we investigate approaches to entrepreneurial action and map various types of business models and their perceived legitimacy by the community. Although the community-focused mode works well for the explorative part of innovation, we find that it imposes limitations on actors who aim to diffuse-i.e., exploit-novel products. By qualitatively analyzing startup companie… Show more

“…While commercial hardware producers play an important role in the 3D printer market, the rapid rise in consumer-level 3D printers is in part attributable to the emergence of various open source 3D printer initiatives (Tech et al, 2016). The open source character of these printers generally provides for free access to the underlying blueprints, combined with the permission for third parties to freely use and adapt the designs.…”

“…So hatte die RepRap-Community insbesondere damit zu kämpfen, dass einige der daraus ausgegründeten Unternehmen ab einem bestimmten Punkt keine Informationen zu ihren Druckern mehr geteilt haben und dadurch der sich selbst verstärkende Wissensfluss unterbrochen wurde (vgl. Tech et al 2016).…”

“…The straightforward fabrication of complex structures with a resolution under millimeter scale using entry-level and open-source hardware 3D printing could be an alternative for the engineering of small-dimension structures [29]. Several microfluidics application requires hundreds micrometer features [14,30,31], which can be achieved using low cost 3D printing, such as connector, mixer or serpentine channels.…”
