a b s t r a c tProductisation relates to the process of analysing a need, defining and combining suitable elements, tangible and/or intangible, into a product-like defined set of deliverables that is standardised, repeatable and comprehendible. This paper clarifies the concept of productisation by surveying the extant literature and reporting the origins, characteristics, benefits and features along with aiming to support future work. The analysed literature is categorised, its content is analysed, and the need for a clear framework is highlighted.The results indicate that productisation has a specific role in addressing the challenges of being able to describe and explain complex, often abstract offerings and producing them, involving activities both to ensure adequate standards and those activities leading to selling the products. A well productised product is easier to buy, sell and market, has stronger features and may enable benefits depending on the product type. Productisation has implications through having a complementary role amongst well established functions and in strengthening the linkage of market needs and engineering-oriented development. The concept requires further development. Potential future research directions are presented.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to identify strategic and tactical factors that are crucial to explore, in future, to get insight into the open innovation spectrum. Design/methodology/approach -The study is based on literature review. To explore progress and future needs of open innovation studies, various contributory papers have been consulted and analyzed. Findings -Definition of open innovation is yet to be clear-cut. What open innovation is and what it is not, is still being debated. Moreover, open innovation overlaps other concepts such as user generation, crowdsourcing, and distributed innovation. Even though research on open innovation has significantly grown, there are still many issues that need to be addressed to get insight about open innovation in various contexts. Studies are mostly performed in the context of large firms and in developed countries. Research in the context of developing countries is still almost an untouched area.Open innovation in the small to medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs') context has gained a foothold just recently. It is crucial to explore some managerial challenges, such as technology transfer, inbound and outbound process, absorptive and desorptive capacity development, particularly in the global open innovation context and it is essential to investigate how open innovation can be implemented for sustainable development.Originality/value -This study is one of the few, if not only one, that has reviewed the trend of open innovation research and its practical implementation. Both researchers and practitioners will get a snapshot of open innovation and its growing necessity in the business world. Some issues have been highlighted, so that future study can be focused in those directions.

Altogether, the dissertation consists of nine substudies and a compendium summarizing the substudies.An extensive literature review was conducted on open innovation and crowdsourcing literature (substudies 1-4). In the subsequent empirical substudies, both qualitative research methods (substudies 5-7) and quantitative research methods (substudies 8-9) were applied. The four literature review substudies provided insights on the body of knowledge on open innovation and crowdsourcing. These substudies unveiled most of the influential articles, authors, and journals of open innovation and crowdsourcing disciplines. Moreover, they identified research gaps in the current literature.The empirical substudies offer several insightful findings. Substudy 5 shows how non-core ideas and technologies of a large firm can become valuable, especially for small firms. Intermediary platforms can find solutions to many pressing problems of large organizations by engaging renowned scientists from all over world (substudy 6). Intermediary platforms can also bring breakthrough innovations with novel mechanisms (substudy 7). Large firms are not only able to garner ideas by engaging their customers through crowdsourcing but they can also build long-lasting relations with their customers (substudies 8 and 9). Embracing open innovation brings challenges for firms too.Firms need to change their organizational structures in order to be able to fully benefit from open innovation. When crowdsourcing is successful, it produces a very large number of new ideas. This has the consequence that firms need to allocate a significant amount of resources in order to identify the most promising ideas. In an idea contest, customarily, only one or a few best ideas are rewarded (substudy 7). Sometimes, no reward is provided for the selected idea (substudies 8 and 9).
