Open innovation and network dynamics. An analysis of openness of co-patenting collaborations in Florence, Italy

“…The challenge posed by globalisation hit the ID model of production on many levels. Responses have mostly focused on creating and defending highly profitable market niches through product distinctiveness and customisation, innovation and design, product experiencing and trend setting, branding and marketing (Bellandi and De Propris, 2015; Belussi and De Propris, 2013; Capone and Innocenti, 2020). Therefore, to remain competitive, IDs had to carve their own space in volatile global markets, as well as seize global production opportunities (Bellandi and De Propris, 2015).…”

Open innovation, which acts as a driving force for effective internal and external flows of knowledge and technology, is unable to capture the value of these flows unless it is first harnessed by essential internal resources [1,19,20].…”

“…They argue that location in a cluster may be a handicap as some companies face a risk of losing their competitive advantage resulting from their own knowledge. The negative aspects of networking in open innovation are noticed for example by Capone and Innocenti (2020). The authors claim that a "generic" openness is not a positive determinant for the invention capacity of the organisations.…”
