Open innovation and intellectual property: a knowledge-based approach

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a patent-based framework for investigating the effect of previous and current open innovation (OI) adoption on firms’ knowledge management strategies and type of innovation output. Design/methodology/approach Patent data are employed for gauging innovation practices, exploitation vs exploration strategies, specialization vs diversification choices and type of innovation. “…In present conditions, possession of a unique informatio nal resource determines the success of most of the company's business processes. The authors of the article support the position expressed by A. Cammarano, M. Caputo, E. Lamberti, F. Michelino, H. Lin and J. Su that innovation activity is a set of consistent, purposeful actions on the implementation of innovative processes based on attraction and use of a unique informational resource, which is characterised by diffusion in the process of consumption [14][15]. So, the position of IFRS 38 (that internally generated goodwill is not recognised as an asset since it is not an identified resource) should be further developed to capture changes in innovation business (Table 4).…”

“…Paasi, Luoma and Valkokari (2010) study how knowledge and intellectual property are managed in collaborative innovation between customers and suppliers through a qualitative methodology of multiple case studies in Finland and in the Netherlands. Cammarano, Caputo, Lamberti, and Michelino, (2017) show the open innovation and the intellectual property as a knowledge-based approach. In other words "managing knowledge via intellectual property rights is integral to open innovation processes" (Bican, Guderian & Ringbeck, [ca] 2017, p. 12).…”

“…From the analysis of literature, it emerges that innovation could be configured not only as an objective to be pursued, but also as a prerequisite for implementing the changes (in all areas) necessary for the pursuit of SDGs. Consistent with the need of adopting cooperative strategies at all levels (as hoped for by SDG 17), contrary to the neoliberal model of competitiveness that restrains the adoption of the SDGs [39], some works have focused their interest on open innovation like one of the most important forms of collaboration in the industrial context, starting from the idea-generation phase [97,98] (also with the help and participation of citizens [99,100]) and from the start-up phase [101], up to the development [102][103][104] and patenting process [105][106][107][108][109] and trying to measure it [109,110]. Other innovative forms of collaboration and knowledge sharing that can aid in the achievement of sustainability are represented by open-source intelligence tools [111].…”
