Opacity measurements in a hot dense medium

Abstract: The first measurements of the opacity in a well characterized, hot, dense, laser-produced plasma are reported. Measurements of the absorption of x rays by l to 2 transitions in Alxit through Alviit have been made in a laser heated slab plasma at the measured temperature and density of 58+ 4 eV and 0.020 0.007 g/cm . The conditions in the plasma were determined to be reproducible, spatially uniform, and in nearly complete local thermodynamic equilibrium. The absorption spectra and the temperature-density data ob… Show more

“…This code uses a basis set of detailed LS terms including interactions with the plasma which are treated as perturbations. Discrepancies from 3% at 10 eV and 10~3 g cirT 3 , up to 60% at 20 eV and 10 _1 gcirT 3 are found.…”

“…Effects of the reabsorption on plasma average ionization (Z), Planck (K P ) and Rosseland (KR) mean opacities (cm 2 /g) for several densities (gcrrr 3 ) and a fixed temperature of T=40 eV. at low temperatures is due to the fact that the máximum of the spectrally resolved opacity is approaching the máximum valué of the Planck and its first derivative functions.…”

“…Due to its importance in astrophysics, experimental data on the opacity of iron are extensive (Da Silva et al 1992;Springer et al 1992Springer et al , 1997Winhart et al 1995Winhart et al , 1996Chenais-Popovics et al 2000;Zhang et al 2012). Apart from iron, the opacities of low-Z (Perry et al 1991(Perry et al , 2000Yang et al 2002Yang et al , 2003Zhang et al 2007) and high-Z elements (Eidmann et al 1998;Zhang et al 2011) have also been measured in laboratories. However, the amount of laboratory measurements concerning the opacity of silicon is very limited.…”
