Onychomycosis and Onychomatricoma

Abstract: Nail dermoscopy is helpful in the differential diagnosis of nail disorders including onychomycosis and pigmented and nonpigmented nail tumors. We report two cases of onychomatricoma with concurrent onychomycosis of the same digit. In both cases, dermoscopy of the nail plate exhibited features of onychomatricoma, whereas dermoscopy of the distal free edge revealed features of onychomycosis. It is not uncommon for patients with onychomatricoma to develop coexisting onychomycosis, as channels created by the tumor… Show more

“…In contrast, subungual melanoma (SUM) is rare and often difficult to diagnose. Nail tumors, such as onychomatricoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the nail unit, are reported in association with onychomycosis, with cases of associated SUM reported only rarely . Nail clipping is a simple diagnostic technique primarily used in clinical practice to obtain evidence of an active fungal infection .…”

“…We found 19 articles that evaluated the dermoscopic features of onychomatricoma in 61 cases . As dermoscopic criteria for the diagnosis of onychomatricoma are not standardized, different studies did not always evaluate the same criteria.…”

“…In some cases, onychomatricoma has been diagnosed as onychomycosis and unsuccessfully treated . Notably, onychomatricoma can also occur in association with onychomycosis because the cavities created by the tumour make the nail plate susceptible to fungal invasion …”
