OntoVIP: An Ontology for the Annotation of Object Models Used for Medical Image Simulation

Abstract: This paper describes the creation of a comprehensive conceptualization of object models used in medical image simulation, suitable for major imaging modalities and simulators. The goal is to create an application ontology that can be used to annotate the models in a repository integrated in the Virtual Imaging Platform (VIP), to facilitate their sharing and reuse. Annotations make the anatomical, physiological and pathophysiological content of the object models explicit. In such an interdisciplinary context we… Show more

“…It also focuses on searching similarity between terms by applying query expansion. Other works [39,40] include the medical image of the liver such as MRI or CT scans in the process of diagnosis and present a pure semantic description of the medical context. Table 2 shows a recapitulation of some related works.…”

“…But little works focus on Bio-Imaging field. (Gibaud et al, 2014) defined concepts used in Bio-Imaging like: Dataset, Processing, Investigators, Medical Image files, Equipment, subjects, etc. (Figure 4) Based on the data model BMI-LM and the classification in Teamcenter, we adapt this ontology to the logic use of information in database.…”

“…VIP faces the issues of producing not only raw data, but also populating its simulated data repository with meaningful data. It thus needs to bridge the gap between provenance in technical simulation workflows and domain knowledge formalized with the OntoVIP domain ontology [10,12] (see section 4.1).…”

“…Second, coarse-grained domain-specific provenance, representing concise domain-specific statements resulting from production rules relying on the VIP medical image simulation ontology. These produced statements will finally constitute "semantic experiment summaries" in which a minimal set of statements link together simulation experiment results to experiment parameters through the OntoVIP [10,12] domain ontology.…”
