OntoMaton: a Bioportal powered ontology widget for Google Spreadsheets

Abstract: Motivation: Data collection in spreadsheets is ubiquitous, but current solutions lack support for collaborative semantic annotation that would promote shared and interdisciplinary annotation practices, supporting geographically distributed players. Results: OntoMaton is an open source solution that brings ontology lookup and tagging capabilities into a cloud-based collaborative editing environment, harnessing Google Spreadsheets and the NCBO Web services. It is a general purpose, format-agnostic tool that may s… Show more

“…For data fields requiring an ontology term, the user can search for these terms from the ISAcreator application using the “Search” Web service. These fatures are also included within OntoMaton [16] available from the Google Script Gallery. Rightfield [17] also constrains data annotation to certain ontologies via an Excel spreadsheet.…”

“…Finally, there are many other relevant tools being developed and released for Google Sheets, so Keemei users will have access to other useful functionality within this interface. For example, users can easily obtain graphical summaries of their data using the Explore function that is built into spreadsheets (e.g., a patient age histogram can automatically be generated from their sample metadata mapping files), or tag their metadata with relevant ontology terms using OntoMaton [8] .…”

“…Columns that accept values from a constrained set offer a pick list of valid choices to choose from and restrict entry to valid terms only. Columns that accept terms from specific ontologies use the OntoMaton (13) plug-in for Google Spreadsheets to restrict valid choices to terms from the current version of the correct ontology at BioPortal (14). The OntoMaton plugin will not be available if the workbook is saved as an Excel file.…”
