Ontology Matching: An Ultimate Solution for Semantic Interoperability in Healthcare

Abstract: The healthcare domain is a complex domain which lacks a unified terminological set, most especially in clinical cases. As a result of this, the messaging standards employed in the healthcare domain use different terms for the same concept which often results in clinical misinterpretation, knowledge mismanagement, misdiagnosis of the patient's illness or even death. Consequently, the healthcare system is characterized by high error rate and semantic heterogeneity. A lot of efforts have been made to resolve this… Show more

“…Interoperability has been an important issue in health care for over a decade and is one of the key aspects of health care systems. 26 A system should be compliant with international open standards for exchange and medical data access. 27 Appropriate methods are proposed by the agency for integration, diffusion, and archiving of medical information (AIDA).…”

“…One significant way of ensuring interoperability amongst diverse systems is the use of standards. Standards are established by consensus and approved by a recognized body to provide rules, guidelines, or characteristics for activities [40]. The adoption of a common standard for data exchange is essential for achieving complete interoperability amongst robotic systems.…”

“…Furthermore, the logistical aspect of the health reality must be considered, namely the supply chains of medicines, medical equipment and their relative management; it is futile to adopt the newest technologies if there is no way to communicate the data they generate. Managing this data requires inter-operational skills, or the ability to exchange information in a precise, efficient and concise manner [41].…”
